Five-Year Performance Evaluation of Geogrid Reinforcement in Low-Volume Unpaved Roads Using Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, Plate Load Test and Roadway Sensing

This paper provides a five-year performance evaluation of an application geogrid reinforcement in low-volume unpaved roads using dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), plate load tests (PLT), and roadway sensing method. A Forest Service road located northern Arizona, USA, exhibited severe deterioration on the surface, creating unsafe traffic environment for vehicles. total four structural sections (1–4; 4.3 m wide) were installed 40 long test area. One additional section existing subgrade/roadbed with native soil adjacent to was used comparison purposes. The project originally completed November 2015, followed by five annual field visits observe surface conditions sections. Based DCP PLT results (both conducted 2015), 2020, made 30 cm thick aggregate one layer appeared have better capacity resisting loading as compared other concludes that, from long-term point view, improves roads, significantly reduced rutting damage both loads weathering effects.
